Last night was bonfire night and we'd planned to head down to Lewes once again for their massive bonfire night celebration. The last time I was down there was back in 2010 and had tried to organise going back over the past few years but without a car it just wasn't easy. Luckily this year we convinced Noel and Megan to come down, and of course drive us back :) Lewes Bonfire is held every year on the 5th of November, the celebrations are made up of large torch lit procession around Lewes streets followed by a number of bonfires and firework displays in the surrounding fields. The event is organised by the local bonfire societies based in Lewes and some surrounding towns and has to be the craziest bonfire night celebration in the South of England if not the whole of the UK. Each Society has its own costumes and makes for a great sight as they parade the streets in the processions.
After leaving work a bit early and catching the train from London Bridge, I got into Lewes and met up with Haig, Caitlin and Warwick who were there already and watching some of the procession which had just started. After grabbing some earplugs from them, I headed back to the station to meet Uns and then tried to find Noel and Megan amongst the crowd before trying to find Haig once again. We managed to get everyone together and get ourselves a decent spot on the high street, where we watched the various processions as they marched up and down the streets.

The processions continued for ages, with all of them involving an awesome mix of fire and explosions. Can't go wrong with that... well, technically you could i suppose! I'm not entirely sure what route they followed around the town, but some of them walking the high street more than once in different directions, others just seemed to pass by the once, so not entirely sure of the process, but was just as good as I remembered it!

Once all the processions had passed and they came to an end, we headed down towards the Cliffe bonfire site, which was a ticketed only event. Some of the other sites are free for all, but Cliffe is for ticket holders only which Haig had organised from a guy he works with, which was handy. The actual bonfire took a while to ignite, I'm sure most of it was fairly damp from the recent wet weather, but once it caught it certainly got going.
Following on from the lighting of the bonfire was the fireworks display which I remember being quite disappointed with last time. But definitely not this time! The display went on for ages, with firework after firework exploding up above us. Really was one of the more impressive displays I've watched!

After the display we slowly started making our way back to the car, which wasn't parked anywhere close to the town centre - I guess with that many people descending on a fairly small town they got to keep the cars as far away as possible to avoid total chaos. We eventually got back to London around 00:30 this morning, and am expecting today to be a rather long day at the office! But all worth it I reckon!
