The Heron Tower - a skyscraper located on Bishopsgate and stands 230m tall including it's mast, making it the tallest building in the City and the third tallest in Greater London, after the Shard and One Canada Square. Construction of the building started in 2007 and was completed in 2011. Most of the floors are occupied or planned as office space, but on the 40th floor is the well-known restaurant and bar, the Duck & Waffle.
I'd been wanting to go there for some time, both for the food which had some excellent reviews but also for the view overlooking London. I'd booked last night's reservations way back towards the end of July, and earliest I could get was last night. Unless of course you wanted to eat around 11pm then there's usually a sooner booking. I met Uns after work outside the Heron Tower and we made our way up the outside glass enclosed lift to the 40th floor which made my stomach turn with the sudden increase in height. But got over it soon enough. Once you're up on the 40th floor, you walk out into the bar area with the restaurant behind. We were lucky enough to have had a window seat on the east side, overlooking the Gherkin, Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf in the distance.

Their dinner options tend to be table sharers, rather than individual items, and we went for the chicken with mushroom and potatoes as our main, which was incredibly tasty. Before that though we settled on a few starter dishes of insanely large olives, Dorset crab toast and the pollock meatballs in parmesan and lobster cream. Dessert involved a dark chocolate brownie sundae and the vanilla baked alaska which probably wasn't necessary but we had to have it. So good! And obviously not forgetting the wine which, despite the price per glass, went down perfectly. All in all, a fantastic meal out.
After eating, we had thought of a quick drink in the bar area but as expected it was fairly packed (and with a queue outside as always), so instead took a walk towards the Gherkin (30 St Mary Axe) to see if they had anywhere open for a quick beverage before heading home. On the ground floor is The Sterling which wasn't too busy, guessing it's one of those pubs that's crammed straight after work then dies down slowly.
We stopped in there for a couple of drinks and some good people watching entertainment, before catching a taxi home in the rain. Glad the rain held off while we were actually at dinner, it didn't matter too much once we were back on ground level and without a view over the city. I'm certainly struggling today after last night's over-eating, but definitely worth it :)
