Last night after work, Uns and myself were meant to head out to Forrest Hill with friends of hers to 'Museums at Night - The Horniman Garden Party' which you get to visit the Horniman Museum after hours and enjoy a night of music and garden-inspired performances such as an art experience by "rAndom International", live music, poetry in the gardens, film screenings, and much more. It's not something I'd usually look into going to, but Greg and Lee had invited us to thought we'd go along and check it out. But by the time Uns and I met up after work, we were both feeling pretty knackered, especially after getting up at 6 this morning to sort out stuff for the builders in the house. So instead we settled on a beer and a curry in Brick Lane which always goes down well, and it's a bit less hippie and arty for my liking :) We first took a walk up to the end of Brick Lane and back, half enjoying and half avoiding the bartering and 'good deals' from each curry house and eventually decided on City Spice, which had won 'Masterchef of the Year 2013' and you know with such a unique award like that it had to be good :)
As much as I'm sure all those curry houses on Brick Lane are basically the same or use the same kitchen, I'd sat last night's curry was definitely one if the better meals I've had in the area. Not sure if I was maybe more or less hungry than usual, or if it's just been a while since we last had Indian, but thoroughly enjoyed it! Will be keeping that one noted. After dinner, we headed off home for a fairly chilled out Thursday evening.
Today, the 17th of May 2013, marks my seven year anniversary after first leaving SA. It was back in 2006 when I left Joburg for Dubai then onto London. Can't believe it's seven years already, but also seems like longer with everything that's gone on and happened since then. Plenty of good memories to look back on....
After work this evening it was Josh's birthday over at The Princess of Shoreditch just down the road from the office. The one advantage (amongst many) of finishing up that bit earlier on a Friday is that you're guaranteed to get a table and seat in the pub after work, which is always handy. After a couple of beers there, I got a call from Uns saying she was heading home, so decided to meet up with her for a quick drink before catching the train. We had walked past Exit Bar last night and commented on it, so decided to pop in there for a quick one, which was actually quite nice inside, although a little too quiet, which was strange for a Friday evening.

After a quick one at Exit Bar, we headed down Brick Lane to a fairly new South African restaurant we'd noticed last night, Jungle Braai Steakhouse. Interesting use of the word Jungle in the name, but we thought we'd give it a try.
I honestly have no idea what that place was all about, or how it could even be South African named. So damn weird! Firstly, there wasn't anything uniquely South African on the menu. They had a poor selection of steak, but did serve both a Braai Burger and a Zulu Burger - the one having two patties instead of one, so again nothing South African related really! There was no alcohol either on the menu and we were probably the only non-Mus customers in the entire place. The best was when they got the prayer mat out inn the kitchen and started to pray and chant. Bizarre! I'd say the burger and chips were OK, nothing great at all - but the whole place really had nothing to do with SA other than the name, a few pictures, a flag on the wall and then even a random Kenyan shield. Hilarious!
