The Derby Stakes, known also as the Epsom Derby, is a Group 1 flat horse race which is run at Epsom Downs over a distance of just over 1 mile, or 2,423 metres. It is Britain's richest horse race, and the most prestigious of the country's five Classics. And that is what our day yesterday involved - sun, horse racing and failed betting.

We had planned to through last year, unfortunately the weather was terrible and never made it through. But this year it made up for it and had a brilliant day on the The Hill which overlooks the early part of the racecourse. There was a decent size group of us there this year - armed with gazebos, picnic blankets, cooler bags and plenty of snacks and drinks for a good day's entertainment!

The main derby was run at around 16h00, and as with all the previous races, I lost any money I put on the horses. Granted, it wasn't very much each time, but I did manage to come away with a perfect record of losses. Most people left there around 5ish once the races were done, except us, who started making our way home around 9ish, and then onto Clapham Junction to Project Orange to finish the night off with a quick beer or two. By the early hours of this morning, it had started to pour with rain, which made the journey home just that bit more exciting. But in general, a fantastic day out at the horses.
