The overnight train ride was an interesting one, well to be more accurate, a bit of a nightmare I guess. The train being late wasn't nearly as much of a problem as the overcrowding and having to using the corridor / other people as a make shift bed / pillow for the night. Good times. However, the crossing between Sicily and Italy main land was impressive in the sense that the entire train gets to 'drive' onto the ferry - which can hold up to 4 full length trains.

After a fun-fueled train ride, we arrived in Naples around 06h00 yesterday morning and took the subway and a taxi to the port and boarded the Metro del mare - a hydrofoil service from Naples, which runs along the Amalfi coast and finally onto the town of Amalfi. It was a two hour 'cruise' along the coast, passing by the island of Capri, stopping at Sorrento and Positano, and finally at Amalfi, where we disembarked.

After arriving at Amalfi, we walked down the road to Atrani (the neighbouring town), checked into the hostel and had a nap, which was needed after the sleepless journey of the night before. In the afternoon we took a walk around Atrani, had some lunch and a few drinks in the main piazza square, then walked over to Amalfi for some sightseeing including the impressive Amalfi Duomo (cathedral). Then last night was the annual Blue Fish Festival which is always in the last week of August. They host it in the main square and involves a beach festival, various vendors selling traditional seafood dishes and local wine on the streets and then finishing off with a fireworks display over the ocean.

Today I had hoped for a day visit to the island of Capri, but time didn't seem to allow it. Instead was a half day visit to Ravello, which is a small town and commune located in the hills above Amalfi, accessible via steep winding roads by bus. Ravello has some stunning views of the Mediterranean as well as their renowned gardens - Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo, and also the Ravello Duomo with an impressive marble altar inside.

After Ravello we returned back to Atrani, had a quick refreshing swim, then caught the bus to Naples, which was by far the most scenic bus journey I've ever taken along the cliff edge of the Amalfi Coast, via Positano and Sorrento. After checking into the hotel here in Naples, we went to the 'Da Michele' pizzeria, which was highly recommended as the most authentic Napoli pizza around. Delicious!
