Lewes Bonfire is held every year on the 5th of November, the celebrations are made up of large torch lit procession around Lewes streets followed by a number of bonfires and firework displays in the surrounding fields. The event is organised by the local bonfire societies based in Lewes and some surrounding towns and has to be the craziest bonfire night celebration in the South of England if not the whole of the UK. Each Society has its own costumes and makes for a great sight as they parade the streets in the processions.

Yesterday I left work a bit earlier, made my way down to Victoria and got train down to Lewes where I met up with Haig, Becky and Taryn who'd driven down a bit earlier. The atmosphere there was pretty crazy, with around 60,000 people spread across the fairly small town. As the touch lit processions pass by, the night is light up by red flairs and flashes from bangers being set off right in front of you.

After the processions had come to an end we made our way over to the bonfire organised by Cliffe Bonfire Society. It was a ticketed only bonfire, but someone that Haig works with is part of the society so managed to get tickets through him. The huge bonfire seemed to take ages to catch as the rain drizzled harder and harder. The firework display that followed the lighting of the bonfire didn't seem to be quite as spectacular as I would've expected it to be. Maybe all the previous street explosions and procession hyped it up a bit too much.

After the bonfire had died down a bit and the fireworks had stopped, we made our way to the car and headed back up to London, getting in rather late in. It was definitely one of the most spectacular processions involving fire, flares and explosions that I'd ever seen, and certainly would be keen to return next year again to check it out. I can see why Lewes is often called the Bonfire capital of the world - there's no doubting that!
